Dexter Thiller

Hi readers today I have learned about opening scene and my teacher used the example of the TV show name Dexter.

Dexter is an American television crime drama mystery series that use to show from 1^st of October 2006 to 22^nd of September 2013. It was set in Miami. The main actor was Dextor Morgan (Micheal C. Hall). A blood spatter pattern analyst for the fictional Miami Metro Police Department who also leads a secret life as a vigilante serial killer, hunting down murderers who have slipped through the cracks of the justice system.

Denotation is the specific, literal image, idea, concept, or object that a word or phase refers to.

Example: Family = group of related individuals

Connotation is an emotional or social association with a word, giving meaning beyond the literal definition.

Example: Family = love, trust, closeness

 Denotation

1.     A guy is sleeping and mosquito is sucking his blood he slapped it.

2.     A guy feeling his mustache and decide to shave it.

3.     While he was shaving he cut himself and bleed.

4.     The blood dropped into the sink first drop in circle but the second and third ruined the circle.

5.     Then the camera focus on his neck and the blood is dripping down. He used napkin, apply them in front of the blood then the tissue absorbs all the blood.

6.     Next scene, the guy uses the knife to cut open the bag of meat

7.     He stabs the meat with the knife and threw it in the hot pan with butter to cook it. Smoke everywhere. He used the knife flip it over then put in his mouth. Chew it very loudly.

8.     He cracks opened an egg, put it into hot pan. Fries it and use the knife to crack the egg yolk open.

9.     I guess it is cooked he then turn off the stove, put the egg on the plate then cut it open again. (I think they fried another one without showing and use the new one instead)

10. He cut it into small pieces and applies ketchup next to it and eats them all. He finished the scene by drip a drop of tomato sauce on the knife.

11. It shows us a coffee seeds being gliding and suddenly into smaller pieces.

12. Pushing the handle of cafetiere very deeply with the tea inside.

13. Cut open a grapefruit and the water vapor of the grapefruit splashes out.

14. Squeeze the grapefruit for the water and show the squeezed grapefruit.

15. He then tied dental floss around his fingers tightly and flosses his teeth.

16. He pulled up his shoelace super tight and the camera pan to his bicep to show that he did it very hard and put the shoelace through the hoop.

17.  He put on his shirt by putting it against his face and slide down to show his face.

18. Then he lock the door walk out of his room

Connotation

(This is what I think it means. It is all from my perspective. It might not be right but that is what it means to me.)

1.     A murder, monster, thief or a bad guy is trying to kill an innocent guy but got caught and got killed instead.t

2.     This part is nothing to do with murder or death but it is about building up tension and makes it looks mysterious and nervous for the next scene.

3.     He cut himself, and blood started to bleed made it a little more exiting.

4.     When the blood dropped onto the sink, first drop was in a circular shape. First of all, this class I had learnt something new and I think it is very important to know. Most important it is part of this point why the blood drop in a circular shape (chubby is also included) and why second drop destroyed the shape.

Have you ever realize about the shape of funny and friendly or the good cartoon characters.

If you did you will realized that most of them are in circular shape.  Circular shape is basically a

Symbol in cartoons of happiness and friendliness.

These are the example of cartoon characters that have circular shape of body, eyes(big/small), ears or even the way they dress.

      

Back to where we were, from my point of view this point, the third drop is something similar to destroying the friendliness, funny, happiness and the good attitude in them. Since it ruins the shapes of the blood.

5.     Using tissue to clean up the blood by putting next to the wound and let it absorbs show me that the blood is spreading out super fast and could not be stop.

6.     The knife cutting through the plastic bag to get the meat out of it. However the bag of meat that they use it looks like part of the body and the plastic bag is the skin. Therefore cutting the bag open it looks like cutting up a human.

7.     Using knife to pick the meat up, throwing it into the pan with butter made this looking similar to torturing. Putting the cooked meat in his mouth look very scary and threatening.

8.     Again an egg, circular shape being crakes open and use the knife to cracks the circular egg yolk again!! (No peace in this opening.) I think this scene have shown very clearly that this show contain very violence scene and it is an adult show.

9.     He then cut it open again when it is cooked. (The must have swap the egg because if the egg was cracked while he was cooking it wouldn’t look as pretty as it is shown.)

The egg in this picture does not look like a cooked, cut, sunny side up fried egg.

10. The tomato sauce that splashed on the plate look like blood and another drip on a fork look like the blood from his shaving in the sink as well.  (As shown in the gift above^^)

11.  Blending coffee seed is just to make us terrifying and build up the interest.

12.  This scene is just another scene that will help building up tension of the audience.

13.  AGAIN, cut up a grape fruit, a circular shape the splashes water vapor could be blood coming out from human body.

14. Squeezing part is getting rid the blood out of the body.

15.  The way he uses the floss tiding it around his fingers is just scary, it is more like he is trying to suffer himself.

16.  This scene is also another scene of making himself suffer but fortunately he was able pull it down and got himself a shirt and not suffering anymore.

17. The rest is just completing the video by making tension as much as they can so the audiences feel excited and get ready to watch the show. By building up tension the audience will also feel nervous and interested.
